The pairing behind the phrase “smooth energy.” What theanine does to a caffeine curve, and the ratio that shows up in the research.

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. On its own it is close to unnoticeable: a mild sense of settling, no sedation, no stimulation. Its reputation comes almost entirely from what it does to caffeine — it appears to take the edges off without taking away the lift.
Trials on attention and reaction time have mostly used something near 100 mg of theanine with 50 mg of caffeine, or a similar 2:1 leaning. In practice, if your morning cup carries 80–100 mg of caffeine, 100–200 mg of theanine alongside it is the range worth trying.
Expect a difference in texture rather than intensity. The same cup lands more evenly — less of the sharp first twenty minutes, less of the hollow drop afterwards. If your problem with coffee is anxiety rather than tiredness, this is the pairing worth a two-week trial before you reach for anything more complicated.
Theanine does not add energy. It changes the shape of the energy you already bought.
