Field Notes
The afternoon slump is rarely a coffee shortage. Five causes, in the order worth checking, and what to do about each.

There is a genuine dip in alertness roughly twelve hours after the middle of your night’s sleep. It is a feature of human circadian biology, not a personal failing, and it is why so many cultures independently invented a short afternoon rest. Recognising the baseline matters, because it stops you treating a normal rhythm as an emergency and drinking your way through it.
A large, refined-carbohydrate lunch produces the steepest afternoons. Protein and fibre first, carbohydrate second, and a smaller portion than habit suggests.
If your last cup was at seven in the morning, three o’clock is roughly when its grip loosens and the day’s accumulated tiredness lands at once.
Mild dehydration reads as fatigue and gets misread as hunger. A glass of water before you decide you need anything else is a free test.
Four unbroken hours in a chair produces its own kind of tiredness. Ten minutes outside resets more than a fourth coffee will.
If the dip is severe every single day, the answer is upstream in your nights. Nothing you drink at three fixes what happened at midnight.
The pattern in all five is that the afternoon is downstream. Light early, water before caffeine, protein at the first meal, a walk before noon — the dip shrinks because the day was built differently, not because you found a stronger stimulant. That is also the honest frame for any coffee additive: it rides on a morning that already works.
You cannot out-caffeinate a badly built morning.
